Arthur Lincoln Pauls, D.O. is the founder of Ortho-Bionomy®. Dr. Pauls drew on many different aspects of his life (e.g., judo, osteopathy, homeopathy) to develop this gentle and effective way of releasing pain and bringing better function to the body. Two of the core principals in Ortho-Bionomy® are exaggerating the pattern(s) and going with ease. As with Judo one goes with the force of movement rather than against it. When the body is allowed to complete its action of strain, it can recognize the pattern and self correct.
What does an Ortho-Bionomy® session look like?
During a typical Ortho-Bionomy® session, the patient remains fully clothed, preferably wearing loose clothing to allow for maximum movement. No oil or lotion is used. The therapist will assess the client standing up or laying down for tight or tender areas. The practitioner will apply gentle compression to the body as well as guide the body through a series of movements and postural positions to effect change. The practitioner might ask the client to do specific light resistive exercises to tone or lengthen a muscle. The techniques range from large movements to those almost imperceivable. Feedback is welcome from the patient throughout the session to ensure that the entire process is as comfortable as possible. The practitioner will not use any kind of force, as the body should be comfortable at all times. The techniques usually results in deep relaxation as tight muscles shift to a better holding pattern. The patient may also be given a number of exercises that can be done at home to further enhance neuromuscular re-education. Sessions run thirty minutes to and hour, with a week between treatments to allow for integration of any changes.
What are some of the benefits of Ortho-Bionomy®?
Ortho-Bionomy®can be very effective for treating injuries, pain associated with structural and postural imbalances, and chronic stress. It works towards creating improved flexibility, reduction of muscle tension, improved circulation, soothing joints, an increased range of motions, and full body relaxation. The positive effects of the therapy tend to be long lasting. Sometimes just a few sessions are enough to feel the difference, while other times a longer period of time may be needed to help re-educate the body into healthier reactions and responses. Ortho-Bionomy® shows people how they can be continuously at ease emotionally and physically, and may also have positive effects on their emotions and attitudes.
